Valley Farm Public school is a vibrant school in Pickering Ontario.
Our school library is an active hub of our school. Daily, most of our 600 plus students visit our school library. Our library is transforming into a Learning Commons. This transormation requires our library to have a new desgin both physically and virtually.
We have had a few renovations over the last few years, but we need more. Our school was built in 1989 and opened with 13 portables. We are a very well used building and our library reflects this. Unfortunately our shelving is in bad shape. It is cracked, dirty and pieced together with chunks of older units. Our walls need a coat of paint. Our lighting is dim and our furniture is dirty and hard to move around to reflect our library learning commons curriculum. We don't even have enough chairs for our students. We love our library but, know it needs a makeover!
If we are to win, we will update our space so that our students truly are learning in an up to date library learning commons that reflects just how amazing Valley Farm PS truly is.
We finished 19 spot(s) from the top ten.
Principal
Our school is in a diverse community. Many ways in which we fundraise for books has become difficult as our community can not always afford book fairs etc. Coupling this with lowered school library budgets our collection is facing a decline in the quality and "freshness" of the circulating and information materials. Our library/learning commons is vibrant. Each day classes use our library for research, computer use and for pleasure reading. As our library is so busy, and our collection is always in use we need the collection to grow and reflect how vibrant our library truly is to our whole community. Also, we are a community with many special and diverse needs. We need materials for our library that reflect these diverse learning styles I.E. dual language, needs levels and ebook/audio book collections.
