Parents at Airport Support Our School Library

Airport Elementary September 13, 2018

Last night we had an amazing turnout for our first PAC meeting of the school year.  It was tremendous to see the outpouring of love and support for our school library.  We had the amazing opportunity to tell our parents about the fact that we were selected by our local Coles Books store for their annual Adopt-A-School fundraising campaign.  Several parents took copies of the Indigo poster home to display in their workplace, gym, child-care centre, or elsewhere in the community.

We are fortunate to serve a tight-knit community where most of our children are able to walk to school.  A Canadian Air Force Base is nearby (just a stone's throw away) and many of our students' parents are serving our nation in other parts of the globe.  Many of our children don't see their Dad or Mom for several months of the year.  Some have even lost parents or other relatives who have been serving in war-torn parts of the globe.  That fact gives us a very special role in our children's lives as we not only provide literacy supports, but many different kinds of emotional supports for our children and the parents or caregivers who are often doing the childcare alone.

We see our library as a learning commons, a safe place for our students to read a book, study, work on the computers, relax, or socialize with their friends in a caring and protective environment.  We try to keep our doors open from first thing in the morning until the last child has left the school.

Our parent community supports our library by providing at-home reading support, book suggestions and gifts, fundraising on behalf of our library, and encouraging our children to grow in their reading development.  We are so grateful to our Airport Elementary PAC and the entire parent community.  Thank you!
