West Park Elementary

Red Deer, Alberta 424 / 335 Books Given

Principal Katharyn Blades At West Park Elementary, we believe a strong literacy foundation, from an early age, is key to educational success. We promote literacy many ways in our school from our Pre-K students to grade 5, and our library is a central part of our literacy program. We have a diverse student population at West Park Elementary School, as our students come from many backgrounds and cultures. As such, we have a population of students and families who cannot necessarily afford to purchase books. Part of what we strive for our library, is for students to find books that will allow them to foster their love of reading, and to share this with their families. The library is a place for all students in our school, no matter their age, reading level, interest, or background. We have a very limited budget for our library, and we try our best to add a small number of books each year that will address the needs of our students. We have an aging library collection, and many of the classics and well loved books are showing how truly well loved they are. If we are chosen as an Adopt A School, we would be able to restock these books, as well as provide many more books to the students in our school. We would love to add to our books to help students who are learning to read English, add to our graphic novel collection, and bolster our collection of novels and young adult fiction, as we do not have an extensive collection there. We have tried to include the library needs in our fundraising the last few years, however, recent fundraising efforts have been far less productive than anticipated. We would love to be considered to be and Adopt A School, and provide the quality and amount of books to our library that our students deserve.
