W.E. Gowling Public SchoolOttawa, Ontario 259 / 350 Books Given
Principal Kim MacDonald
W.E. Gowling is a school with approximately 350 students in the Carlington community. We are a designated R.A.I.S.E. school by the OCDSB. (Resource Allocation Index based on Socioeconomics) This is our school board's identification of schools which have a higher number of students from households with low income, single-parents and newcomers to Canada including refugees.
As a result of the significant number of our students being from low income homes, many do not have money to purchase books. Further to that, there isn't a public library within walking distance to our student's homes thus our school library is their primary source of reading material. Our students are hungry for books and literature and are eager to come to their school library to find books.
Our students love their library books to the point they are falling apart. Many books have been taped, re-taped, glued, stapled and glued again in order to keep them in circulation as we are unable to replace damaged books with new books. In addition to our beloved, ragged and worn out books we have books which unfortunately accidentally are no longer fit for circulation. Often water or juice gets spilled on books or pages tear and sometimes younger siblings contribute to the cause of a book's demise.
Kindly consider supporting W.E. Gowling Public School during the Adopt a School Campaign to put exciting new books in the hands of our students.
The students at W.E. Gowling, especially our English language learners, love graphic novels and as a result they are the most requested and circulated books in our library. Here is a list of our absolute favourite books:
1. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series / Jeff Kinney
2. Smile, Sisters, Drama and Ghosts / Raina Telgemeier
3. The Amulet Series / Kazu Kibuishi
4. Space dumplins / Craig Thompson
5. March Grand Prix / Kean Soo

My elementary school librarian, Mrs. Murray, helped me fall in love with reading. I was in fourth grade before the reading bug hit but it was her endless suggestions of books I should try that finally got me hooked on reading. Thank you, Mrs. Murray, for knowing all the books in your library ...
My son just started going to this school in September, and the community is just fantastic. The staff we've met so far are phenomenal, responsive, creative, and care deeply for the students at the school. I grew up in a single parent home with a lot of government support at a school in a really ...
Thanks for allowing us the opportunity to have a positive impact on the education of bright kids in our community. This is great! Hope the campaign is a big success this year :)
I am supporting this school because when I first started working as a librarian W.E. Gowling was one of the first schools where I had the chance to work for an extended period of time. I could really develop my craft in a school that promoted reading, and made me feel that I was making a ...
I 'm supporting W.E. Gowling because I am their school librarian. I see students who love their weekly library visits. I am the staff member who sees firsthand every single face anxious to find that next great read. I hear all the requests for the next book in a favourite series or latest new ...
Pierre Berton's, The Secret World of Og, is likely the children's book that has had the biggest impact on my life. My grade four teacher, Mrs. Smart, chose it as one of our read alouds during the 1976-77 school year; to this day I remember it fondly. I felt a deep connection to Penny, Pamela, ...

Happy reading and learning!
I would have to say, the Toes in my Nose compilation of children's peoms authored by Sherrie Fitch is hands down the best from my childhood! Sherrie is from my hometown of Fredericton so some recognizable images and people from my past were incorporated into the book! Beyond this, the poems ...
