We need current and up to date books both fiction and information books. At, St. Joseph School the students represent a range of reading levels and socioeconomic backgrounds. We encourage every child to become a skilled, thoughtful, avid reader. We encourage and search for books that will intrigue students. Nothing equals the power of the right book at the right time. Most importantly, students discover that reading is fun and will become readers for their entire life.

"I am supporting St. Joseph's Catholic School in Chatham, as that was my elementary school. I am an avid reader and I think all children should have many books available to continue growing!"

What are the 3 books every school library should have and why?

"Every school library should have "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis; "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White; and "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. I believe that all three of these books should be in the library of every school as I find they are unique and can help children grow and learn. 'The Outsiders' to gave me a perspective of how life can be very different for children from different back grounds and that we should not judge each other based on looks. It also allowed me to picture how life was very different in a different time frame. 'Charlotte's Web' is about a person's friends can come the most unexpected places {ex. spider), but it was also teaching Charlotte how to spell. 'The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe' is unique and allows the child to imagine a different world. This lets the child know that it is ok to be creative."

If the books weren't in the library, he may never have been exposed. I totally support this effort."

"3 books every elementary school should have are harry potter, a series of unfortunate events and Narnia. all these books are wonderful adventure books that are beautifully written. and yes they may be all series and yes they are more challenging books but they are classics that every children should read. they are all timeless books that evoke a sense of childish wonder in ever reader regardless of their age. these books are also big parts of our culture and have been around for years. they are simply wonderful books i believe every one must read. "I think every school should have Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, Artemis Fowl Series by Eion Colfer, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Harry Potter was the first book that made me realize that I am a reader. Rowling created a truly magical universe where kids can easily lose themselves. Artemis Fowl is a character that every bright student should aspire to be. At least one lesson that students can learn from Artemis Fowl is that they can kick butt using their brain. Charlie and the Chocolate factory allows students to live in a world of pure imagination. It also allows them to hope for a better future for themselves and to be themselves, but to always follow the rules."

What is your favourite memory from your elementary school library and why?

"My favourite memory from my elementary school library was story time with the librarian. My classmates and I would sit on a carpet while our school librarian read us themed books for each season. I loved hearing new stories every time I visited the library. I also liked checking out books from my school library to share at home. I have done so many things in my school library such as scavenger book hunts, voting for my favourite books, and "blind book dating" where I picked a book covered in paper with my favourite topics written on the front, and "book tasting". My elementary school library encouraged me to read and because of that I am so thankful to be a strong reader and writer today. "

"My favourite memory from elementary school was the library! It was a chance to read a new book or two every week! It was a restful and relaxing part of the week for me. I thought it was the best subject in the school, even better than recess! My librarian was so kind. Besides helping me choose books every week, and setting aside special books for me, she even helped me decide on a science fair project and then showed me how to do research for my science fair project. I didn't win anything on my project, but I was very proud of my project and the research that I did on it. We would sit on the carpet and she would read wonderful stories to us! Books are mini-vacations for the brain. In this busy world, it is nice to pick up a book and travel to another country, or another time, period, into space, to the future or back in the past all for free!"
