James Short Memorial

Calgary, Alberta 25 / 250 Books Given

Principal Cheryl Zelmer James Short Memorial is a very special school with limited financial resources. We support the communities of Penbrooke Meadows and Applewood in the SE of Calgary. Our students are in EDC (3 and 4 year old children with communication needs) up to grade 2. Our community is very diverse. Approximately 50% of our population are English Language Learners. We have a very strong focus on early literacy and numeracy, and are teaching our young students and their families what school is all about!

Our families care very much about their children, but many cannot afford to provide a large collection of books for their children at home.

We are in the beginning stages of forming a parent-led fundraising society. Because we have been without this society for many years, we have not had the fundraising abilities that many schools have.

The staff of James Short Memorial have tried many different ways to extend our book collection. In many cases, school staff have donated books to the school from their own funds. We have made great strides in revitalizing our Learning Commons, and are continually replacing old, worn books with great children's literature. However, our classroom libraries are sorely lacking in adequate quality children's literature. This year, ensuring that each classroom has an enticing, fun-to-read collection of books is our goal.

We are really hoping that this influx of great books can be a part of our renewal and the building of strong literacy skills and a love of reading for our young learners. Every book counts!
