We are a very small school with a multi-grade format. Students who enrol are usually in the same classroom with the same books for at least three consecutive years. We currently do not have a proper library system where students can check out new books to read and the nearest Public Library is approximately 50 km away. Our School Development Plan is rich with reading components in an attempt to raise literacy levels but the task is difficult when students are disinterested in reading the same books over and over again. A fresh set of books would go a long way for us and hopefully help create a love for reading again.

I read that book in Grade 7 and it was probably the best book I ever read.

"Written by Daniel Gavin, Grade 12 Student

I remember when we first had a library, it wasn't much but it was 4 shelves filled to the top with books. There are a lot of people at my school that enjoy reading and we are running out of new books to read. I remember when we received new books last year and how excited everyone was. It would be nice to see that again.

"My dream library would have a big comfy chair with pillows for my back and hassocks for my feet and blankets to crawl under. There would be picture books and literature and space and history books. It would be quiet with soft lighting coming through the window or a reading lamp on the table by the chair. No one would disturb me while I lost myself in whatever I was reading. Time would go by slowly so that I could get involved in the story. My surroundings would disappear as I found myself following Gulliver in his travels or joined Robin Hood and his Merry Men in the English forests or Christopher Columbus as he traveled to the New World. This is the stuff dreams are made of so I would go home and finish the story in my sleep!"

"I've been a teacher at St. Peter's Academy in Westport for over 5 years now and every year our staff tries to find new and exciting ways to inspire a love of reading in the K-12 student population. Last year was the first time we entered into Indigo's Adopt a School initiative, hoping to achieve this goal. As people across the country donated books everyday and we saw our own numbers grow, students, staff and community became a little excited about the thought of filling our bookshelves with fresh, new titles. When the contest was over and students and staff were given the task of choosing the new titles to add to our school library, excitement grew even more. When the books arrived and were placed on the shelves for students to pick up and read, excitement was through the roof. It was the first time, in my five years at the school that the hallways were filled with most students choosing to read books during their free time. There was even a wait list created for certain books and some students rushed to be at the top of the list because they couldn't wait to read them. It was such a refreshing and worthwhile experience to be a part of the Adopt a School initiative last year so I'm supporting St. Peter's Academy again just to experience the excitement and positivity that it brought to our school for at least one more time!"

You would find books on plants, trees, tools, equipment, and how to survive. It would also consist of books on showing you the "How To's" in surviving on the land and sea, from tying and baiting a hook, to how to use a rod, to hunting needs. "

"As the new ELA teacher here at St. Peter's Academy this program set out by Indigo is really up my alley! I love books, I love to read, and I love to share that passion with my students! Once I seen the library here at the school, I immediately wanted to make it grow! I want the students to be able to find a book that triggers their interest, a book they struggle with putting down because they just need to know "what happens next", or a book that can help shape who they truly are. As a child, a teenager and even into my years of post-secondary, books were always one of my favourite purchases. There's nothing more exciting than turning the page of a brand new book, getting ready to set yourself up for an adventure within those pages. One of my favourite children's book author is Dr. Seuss, and he sums up the importance and magic of books and reading perfectly; "You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back & relax. All you need is a book"

"When I was in elementary school, I remember the point when my friends and I found a passion for poetry, especially anything from Shel Silverstein. We each took turns borrowing "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "A Light in the Attic" from our school library and reading them aloud to each other at recess. I found so much joy in reading the silly poems and I think I may have read every book of poetry in the library beyond Silverstein. This lead me to realize the usefulness of poetry in creating a love of reading, which is why I try to incorporate it as much as possible into my classroom literacy programs. Just like myself in elementary school, the students I've taught over the years have been drawn to poetry and it has even helped struggling readers engage more in reading activities. "
