Last year we participated in the Adopt a School Program and we were delighted and so pleased at how we were supported by our school community and those around us. We are participating again this year as we would like to ensure our students have up to date and exciting reading materials available. Our school mission states, "The GBA Community inspires and encourages students as the develop global competencies and knowledge in a supportive and respectful environment." Every book that we can put into the hands of a child opens a world of possibilities for that student. In addition, we have some families in our school community who struggle financially and our school needs to be able to provide all of the support possible that we can to ensure that students have the resources needed to achieve to their potential. We strive to a make a difference every day for our students and enhancing the resources available to our students is a big part of our support plan. We thank you for supporting our students.

"My librarian, Mrs. Drayton, had different voices for all of the different books she read to us. She brought alive Curious George, Frances and Amelia Bedelia to name a few. She always made reading fun and made the library a warm and inviting place to be. She helped to instill of love of reading in me that last to this very day."

"It is too hard to pick just one favourite character from a children's book. But, one of my all time favourites, and a character you are probably quite familiar with, is Princess Elizabeth from The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch. No one can argue about the strength of her character. She is true to herself and not afraid to stand up for what she believes. Young or old, we could all take a lesson from her."

What is your favourite memory from your elementary school library and why?

"As the years go on, and our memories fade, there are some moments that never seem to erase from our minds. When I think back to my elementary years as a student, the clearest moments for me are the visits to the library. Maybe it was being surrounded by the endless rows of books waiting to be opened and discovered, maybe it was the chess tables set up in the centre inviting those spatially strong wizards, or maybe it was even the smell of the paper, new and old. I'm not sure, but when my librarian sat us in front of her and cracked open that hard cover book (usually wrapped in plastic), it was just like going to the movies. It was quiet...there was anticipation...it was time to get lost in a story. I would go home and set up my stuffed animals and pretend I was her. To this day I can't wait to find that quiet time to read.
I think of her often, especially when I sit in my chair, looking at all those expectant faces looking up at me, as I crack open a book (often Robert Munsch!), and read to my own class. čśü"
