It's a new school year and once again, VMES, is asking for your support. Last year we came in 5th place. We were so close to the top three. This year we hope to improve our standing. Please spread the word.

"My favourite memory is being asked to read to the class in elementary school. I have always loved to read and would spend hours every night nose deep in a good Nancy Drew story often reading aloud. It was good practice for me when I later attended broadcast journalism school. "

"I have 3 boys with my youngest in grade 5 at VMES. They have all developed a great love of reading and never travel far without a book in hand. A book is the best gift we can give our children. Not only does it increase their knowledge, but it sparks the imagination. "

"I have 3 boys with my youngest in his final year at VMES. All of them have developed a great love for reading inspired by their teachers over the years. Reading not only increases knowledge, but it sparks their imagination, and starts conversations. There is no better gift than a book."

"I started attending Vincent Massey when I was in Grade 1 and I will never forget our schools librarian, Mrs Ferguson. We used to all walk up to the second floor, to the brightly coloured library for reading time. Mrs Ferguson would select a book and we'd all race to sit in either of the chairs beside her to listen. She was the best book reader, and I am sure over the course of her career she read stories to few thousand children who hopefully will continue to have the same experience of marching upstairs, to find the library chairs in a circle and then race each other to get one of those coveted chairs beside the librarian.
I have not been in VMES since 2000, when I graduated from Grade 6, but I hope the library has remained a strong and important part of the small school tucked away in Saint Andrews by -The- Sea. "

Why are you supporting this school and their library?

"Every child no matter where they live should have access to a variety of books . Books allow us to travel to foreign lands and experience exotic places . We are limited only by our imaginations and the words on the pages. The more we read , the better writers we become. Books can entertain, motivate and develop young minds. I support Vincent Massey Elementary as they value the power of the written word and believe that every child deserves to succeed. The community of Saint Andrews understands how a vibrant school library can create a passion for learning , enhance communication skills and creativity, and engage students in their community. I applaud our community 's efforts to get books in the hands of children. Thank you Indigo for making a difference!"

"My fondest memory from my elementary school was painting an amazing ocean mural in our quiet reading area. I know I enjoyed many books there and I would hope that many more kids have enjoyed their reading time with the mural. "

"Our family became part of the VMES community 10 years ago. While so many things about this school impressed me (and continue to do so), one thing that stood out back then was the community presence in the school. In particular, the Legion Readers that gave freely of their time to read each week to our students. The children looked forward to their weekly reading visitor. Granddad Jim has had a tremendous impact on our students. He was the beloved reader for the Kindergarten class for many years. They would great him as he entered the building with big smiles, waves and hugs. This year, Granddad Jim has retired as a Legion Reader and although his weekly visits will be missed, the impact he has made on many St. Andrews students will continue for many years."
