Ecole Parkdale School needs books to foster the love of reading for our kids. Many families at our school have a tough time making ends meet. Some of these kids don't have any books in their home and the books they get from the school library are the only books they ever see. I want to make sure that I am able to supply them with books that will interest them so they will learn to enjoy reading. We have many different reading levels in this school and we don't have enough for everyone to find high interest books in their level.

Who is your favourite character from a children's book and why?

"I have so many books that I love. Books have enabled me to take trips and go places I have never been. My favourite books growing up was the Little House on the Prarie. I loved the family connections and relationships in the stories. Laura Ingalls Wilder was one feisty young girl. She was a strong girl, who demonstrated respect, yet was able to be independent. I read the series many times. I continue to read everyday. I am currently re-reading The Harry Potter Series, love the characters. There are just so many books that I love. "

"I am the librarian at Parkdale School and I get so much joy when I see a student find a book that they are excited about. I want everyone to love books as much as I do, so if I can find THE book that makes the kids want to read, then I feel like I am making a difference in their lives."

"My kids began attending Parkdale simply because it was the closest school to our home. Quickly, it became apparent that this was not just any school.

The staff and administration at Parkdale truly foster an environment that breeds a love of learning. They go out of their way to make sure that every student who walks through their doors is not only taken care of academically, but emotionally and physically. I have witnessed the staff pooling resources together for families in our school community who cannot afford simple necessities. I have witnessed teachers staying way past the school day to help students learn, to speak with them and even to their parents. There is an implicit genuine love that radiates from all of the staff - they love their jobs, even when it's tough, and it shows.

Our library is such a vital part of the school's community. Many of those within the student population may not have access to their own books. I have personally witnessed the librarian pouring over the books during the Book Fair hoping to find a book for a child who had been begging for her to bring it into the school. With such a limited budget , it's difficult to even consider adding new books into our library. The students at this school absolutely deserve to have a wider range of versatility in the literature available.

As a child, the library was one of the only places I was able to access books, and it continued to be that way into my youth. My love of literature comes completely and wholly from programs such as these, and educators who shared their passion of reading with me. It's a life long gift that I will always be grateful for. Parkdale's staff is definitely doing their best to give the students in their school a love of reading, and as a parent, I cannot thank them enough for it.

I love reading about all sorts of things; magic, adventure, mystery, crime, love, anything! That is why my dream library would be filled with books of every single genre, for every single age of person out there.

Reading can be so inspiring, while also filling your head with so much knowledge & this is exactly the reason no child should be deprived of the greatness of books.

"Ecole Parkdale's library needs more books! Barb has done a great job organizing the library and removing the many old, out dated books that we had. Now we need to replace them with books that interest today's children. Barb inspires the children to read more, now they just need the books."

"I am supporting this school because many of the students here do not have the opportunity to experience to joy of reading anywhere else in their lives. To be able to have a great library with a wide variety of books is so important to the students of this school. "
