Buffalo Rubbing Stone is a new school that will begin with a skeleton collection of books. In order to increase the collection to the number of books needed for our student population to allow them proper access to literature, we will need to fundraise. Students need books to develop the love of reading, a goal of our new school.

Who is your favourite character from a children's book and why?

" My favorite character from a children's book is Harry Potter due its extremely complex character that deals with every adolescent emotion such as death, love, hate, jealousy, depression, loneliness and new/old friendships.

His character relates to everybody both young and old. His actions and emotions tends to draw the reader in, wanting to become part of his world, waiting for his next move and leaves the reader wondering what will happen next or should happen next.

At the same time, I like that Harry Potter is an underdog and tries his best to be a better person despite all the odds against him. As reader I'm rooting for him to overcome his struggles and emotions for a better future. The character continues to draw me in deeper and deeper as I get to know him better with each book. I love the book series and movies! The books are so detailed that I can imagine the scenes coming to life.

In doing so, they had very little time to nurture us in others luxuries in life, such as reading. I did not find a love for reading until after I graduated from university (when it was fun to read again). Now that I have children of my own, I want them to find their love for reading years before I did."

"Both of my daughters attend Rubbing Buffalo School in grade 2 and kindergarten. We have been reading to our children since birth which has increased their knowledge of the world and their vocabulary.

I was shocked that my older daughter at the time was 3 1/2years old could read the sign "Now Open" at Save on Foods when it first opened. She asked me why does the sign say "Now Open", I was like you could read that? At that point, I was motivated to read even more to her since reading is a way of communicating with others.

To foster this love of reading, a wide variety books are required to peak each child's interest and encourage reading regularly. Now in Grade 2, she has gone through almost all of the Rainbow Fairies books series and she is now into the Magic Tree House book series. If there is no variety in the library, the child can become disengaged and become discouraged to read more. A library can develop imaginations and encourage children to learn without knowing it. "

What does your dream library look like?

"My dream library would have tall ceilings, tall columns and large windows looking out onto green space. The architecture would be neo-classical design and the furniture would consist of large tables for studying, couches to read, fireplace to cozy up to with a good book. The shelves would contain old encyclopedias, fiction, non fiction books, magazines, newspapers and it would be great to have a tv running in the background with current events such as the news, weather, etc... The library would also have a few conference rooms where people can hold meetings and lectures. The library would be a place where people can feel inspired, relaxed and focused. Therefore, it would have quiet spaces, group spaces and meeting rooms.

What is your favourite memory from your elementary school library and why?

" My favorite memory of my elementary school was having the opportunity to meet Robert Munch. In grade 2, he attended George Jay Elementary School in Victoria, BC and read one of his books to our class. He was just as animated in person as he was in his books.
Our school librarian was Mr. Bob Warren, he was very engaged and passionate about learning and reading and eventually become the principal of the school. He was very generous contributing his personal resources to the kids at the school. As part of our school field trips, he bused kids to his Brentwood farm where we rode karts on a race track and visited his farrm animals. The school was mainly comprised of immigrant families or low income households. I think he wanted give children the opportunity to experience something he knew they could never experience in their childhood. I have some of the fondest memories at the school, the majority of the teachers were compassionate and had a passion for teaching and engaging the children.
At the school, we were exposed to very unconventional school curriculum such native arts studies, 50's swing dancing, canasta card games and ukele music classes.

"I have two daughters attending Buffalo Rubbing Stone this year and it is with great excitement that i am supporting our new community school.

My younger daughter is entering Kindergarten and is lucky enough to enjoy this experience with two of her closest cousins that also live here in Panorama Hills....Kindergarten has already been super fun for all of them and it's only been 2 weeks in!

My older daughter transferred to BRS from a school that she had to ride the bus for 35 minutes or more each way to and from. We had chosen her previous school after being rejected from 4 other schools through the lottery system.

We are so happy that our kids can attend a school in the community that we do not have to win through any lottery (it was actually built for us to attend!) and is within walking distance from our house. This brings me back to the days when we were kids and were able to walk to school and grow up with our best friends/neighbors in our community.

Our whole family is excited to attend Buffalo Rubbing Stone!

"This is my mom's new school....she is the principal but here is why I support this program for this school.

Reading was always very important in my house growing up and my parents always focused on finding that one book that would hook us on reading. Once we found that book, series, style etc they would pick up any book that fell within that category.

By having so many books at my disposal, I was sure to find something to fall in love with. Kids need to be exposed to a variety of books so they can find their hook."
