Our small school has an equally small library budget and we are simply unable to provide the quality and quantity of books that our students deserve. We haven't been able to update our books for some time as our school budget allows only a minimum amount of books to be purchased each year. Our books are quite outdated and they make up the bulk of our collection. Our students are hard working, kind and love reading and by having current and a greater variety of books in the library it would be a great gift to them. Some of our students are only exposed to reading at home through the books they take out each week and we’d love to keep their enthusiasm ripe by offering the best that we can. All of our teachers do the best by reading e-books with the children in class however we still believe that brining books home, to read with family is what encourages children in all areas of their education. We feel that being adopted by the Square One Chapters store during this fall program will bring us a much needed helping hand that will directly benefit our students. Help us grow our library! Your donations are greatly appreciated!

Who is your favourite character from a children's book and why?

"It had to be Elizabeth from Robert Munchs' The Paperbag Princess'.
Elizabeth was loving -she went after her prince, courageous -she went looking for the dragon, and she was determined and tricky -she gave that dragon a run for his money. These were all traits that I related to as a young girl so it was nice to find a heroine that was like me. The fact that she was independent -she left Ronald and skipped away into the sunset alone at the end was just the ending I loved as a young girl. "

"I am supporting this school and its library because this is the school that I went to as a child and now my son is attending. A school library is so important to a child and their development. Once a week my son comes home and eagerly pulls out his new library book that he got that day and every night he reminds me that we need to read his new book. I have visited the school library and it brings back so many memories of when I was a child and how we used to visit the library and the librarian would read stories to us. What I have noticed though is that the shelves don't look as full as they used to. So having St. Vincent de Paul being part of the adapt a school program is important so that my children will have the same memories that I share about their schools library.
Thank You for all your support

"My story revolves around my belief that rich reading is the right that every child everywhere should have. What are the 3 books every school library should have and why?

"My story revolves around my belief that rich reading is the right that every child everywhere should have. Reading is the way to find out who you are and indeed, the path to finding out who you may become. Every person has a story within themselves and that story is enhanced when we can open our minds and hearts to the stories of others. Three books that embrace this belief are The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo, The Littlest Matryoshka by Corinne Demas and The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce. These books speak to the belonging that can be found within the pages of a book, a belonging that we can draw upon in all times of our lives. I think that books are essential - the very crux of education and a lifetime of learning. Every child belongs in the 'club'. Every child deserves quality reading material for the myriad of gifts books bestow--knowledge, perception, compassion, satisfaction of curiousity and above all, the wonder of imagination. So, my story is actually a gratitude for all the light that reading has given me. It is my wish that every child lose themselves in the words and worlds of books."

What is your favourite memory from your elementary school library and why?

"There are so many wonderful things I remember about my elementary school library. I remember being excited about going into the "reading pit" to hear a story read by our librarian Mrs. Evans each week and about seeing our artwork decorate the library as it was a place that the whole school would visit. But probably my fondest memory is when I recall thinking as a primary grade student that our school had a book about every single topic imaginable; animals, planets, choose-your own, sports, castles, painters , inventors, you name it. And what was even more amazing was that our librarian knew about each book! I remember thinking that Mrs. Evans must be really busy at home reading every single one of our books before she puts it on the shelf! It's this wonder and childlike amazement that I had as a child about books and our school library that drove me to pursue an "adoption" through the Indigo Adopt a School program for my children's school library. Our small school gets an equally small budget to spend on books and I want to help transform our library to have books on a variety of topics so that when our students ask for books on just about anything we'll have just the book to start their literary journey! Thank you for your support!"

"St. Vincent de Paul School may be a small school in numbers but the hearts of all 187 children and their teachers make it bigger than any other school in Mississauga. The reason why I am supporting this school is not only because my 2 children attend school here, but because I believe that every child has a right to a new book. "
