Red Deer, Alberta 727 / 250 Books Given

Principal Kim Walker Our school is primarily an ESL school located in a lower socio economic neighbourhood, so there is always a need for a diverse selection of books in order to maintain interest and accommodate the various reading levels of our students. We also provide books for as many students as possible as end of year prizes. These books are presented as awards for any many reasons as there are students. Our teachers make the most of their small classroom budget ($30.00 per classroom) in order to reach as many students as possible, encouraging a love of reading and a respect for the written word. Each book is carefully selected and wrapped and the students are recognized at a special assembly for their unique achievement. It's a wonderful program and one our school has maintained for many years, no matter the state of the overall budget. In addition, we host literacy days or evenings where we do our best to have each family in attendance take home a new book. Also we host evening for our Indigenous families and the door prize on those evenings is a culturally relevant book. The majority of our students do not come from book rich environments, so we do as much as we can to encourage reading at every turn. (The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. *Dr. Seuss*) Thank you
