Kennetcook District School

Kennetcook, Nova Scotia 157 / 102 Books Given

Principal Leanne Searle The Kennetcook District School library has been operating for the past 6 years as a volunteer-run elementary school library for about 100 students. A team of dedicated parent volunteers work within a budget of less than $300 to create collections that the students need and want. We have very enthusiastic young readers - more than 80% of the students said that they like to read. And the students have a nearly 100% weekly sign out rate. That creates long waiting lists for the popular books, both fiction and non-fiction. Our rural location means families on limited budgets may not have the means to make the long drives to public libraries, let alone buy books.

This fall, we hope to update the non-fiction section. Our shelves show their age with out-dated and partial collections. Updating the non-fiction section will better support our students with their school research projects.

Our volunteer librarians hear the enthusiasm in the students' requests for more books: "the next in the series", more non-fiction, more of the popular titles and current authors all while adding their names to the waiting lists and new books to the wish list.

The Indigo Love of Reading campaign is an important part of updating our aging collections up-to-date and creating new generations of enthusiastic readers. We appreciate your support to ensure our students' academic success, and to promote this love of reading.
