Willoughby Elementary School

Langley, British Columbia 68 / 481 Books Given

Principal Phillis Giovani Willoughby Elementary is a K to Gr 5 school located in a continuously growing neighborhood. In the last two years, our school population has once again increased by approximately 200 students! As an example, next school year, Willoughby Elementary will have six Kindergarten classes. With the generosity from our Willoughby family community, and past support from the Indigo Love of Reading, we have been able to fill in a few gaps, add to series, and replace some much loved, but worn titles. Unfortunately, the ratio of funds per student does not keep up with the need to vitalize our aged collection. We are reluctant to discard many of the old titles as we have very limited funds.

The condition and age of our books are not keeping up with the many changes made to the BC curriculum (such as, 'weather' has gone from Grade 4 to Kindergarten and our materials are obviously too high for early primary).
Our teachers do an amazing job instilling the love of reading and learning through the printed book, and at the library we do our best to support this by offering our students titles that engage them. This can sometimes be difficult when many of the popular titles require repairs due to heavy use.

Our goal as a library is to fill our student's literacy needs, provide current and reliable resources, establish a life-long love for books, and enrich them with exposure to new worlds through reading. Being chosen as a lucky recipient of the Adopt a School Program would help us support our population growth, learning needs, and love of reading.

Thank you for the opportunity to make this happen!
