Scarborough, Ontario 580 / 419 Books Given

Principal Leigh Haines Taylor Creek Public School is a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school located in Scarborough and is part of the Toronto District School Board. More than 50% of the students primary first language is other than English. In addition, we are part of the Model Schools for Inner Cities Program which is committed to ensuring children who face challenges such as poverty or language barriers receive access to the supports needed in order to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. We offer a daily breakfast and snack program. Our school is also shared with an Ontario Early On Parenting Centre and a City of Toronto Daycare. Many of our children rely solely on books from the school library to support and foster their love of reading. Without the library, many of our children would have little to no access to quality reading materials in their homes. With approximately 420 children from Kindergarten to Grade 8, it is difficult on a very limited budget to purchase a wide variety of books to support the diverse needs and interests of the students. By purchasing new books, we would be able to continue to improve our school library and to help provide the children with the reading materials necessary to develop into passionate life long readers and 21st century learners. Our school is in need of increasing our literacy materials and adding a wider variety of genres and more culturally relevant resources. Any funds received will allow us to replace a significant number of outdated books many of which are 20 years old or older.
