CHASE RIVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

NANAIMO, British Columbia 6 / 235 Books Given

Principal Darren Dickie Chase River Elementary School is located in rural South Nanaimo and has a small but growing community of learners. As with most schools, our literacy programs have focused on our youngest students with the intention of ensuring the greatest success at the earliest age. In recent years, we have boosted our guided reading book collection with particular focus on Aboriginal content and this has aligned well with the newly redesigned BC curriculum.
In response to recent assessment results, the staff of Chase River are recognizing the need to also focus on the development of reading fluency with our middle and intermediate students through guided reading techniques and targeted interventions. With effective reading fluency and good comprehension, children see reading as a form of entertainment and recreation leading to a joy for reading. To this end, it is our hope to boost our library collection with high interest / low vocabulary books as well as to update our fiction and non-fiction collections. The enthusiasm we see when new materials arrive is amazing to see. Thank you for any help you can give to keep that feeling going.
