Why do we need books:
To educate, encourage learning, to give our students a love of reading and learning from the books in our library and foster a life-long love of literature.
At Ellison Elementary School, there has been a large turnover in librarians in the last five years. With this high turnover, there hasn't been the chance to go through our book collection and purchase some new books to update our collection. Also, With our limited budget we have felt the impact in our library.
With the increase in project based learning in our classrooms, we have fallen short with the number of non-fiction titles that can provide our students with relevant, up to date information and can be used to help the students successfully learn and complete these projects. A limited amount of funds, supplemented by 2 school community book fairs per yer, has allowed us to purchase some new titles for our library. We have made do for the past five years and feel incredibly excited about the prospect of actually being able to purchase some new books for our library if we are successful applicants for this program.
We live in a community in which our student's love of literature would grow with the addition of new and engaging titles for them to read. At least four times a week I have students coming into our library asking us if we have the newest titles (Rick Riordan, Oliver Jeffers, and Eric Walters among other authors). I want to be able to provide engaging, exciting books for our students to read. At Ellison Elementary, we are dedicated to creating and fostering a love of literature in our school, and providing the titles that may draw more students into our library would be ideal!
