St Patrick Elementary School

Calgary, Alberta 40 / 230 Books Given

Principal Ryan Miller St Patrick is a small elementary school of 230 students. Because of that, we have the opportunity to know each and every student. St Patrick is a positive, caring community that really cares about our students' success as learners with inquiry minds.

Our learning commons library is very outdated and needs new books in all categories. They are old and have been well-loved many times over the years. Our students are literally reading books that are falling apart in their hands. We do not have many popular books requested and students are becoming frustrated with the selection we have here. Our non-fiction books are quite old and the information is out of date. I fear weeding them from our shelves will result in very little books left.

We have been working very hard to get the student's reading interest up and have put a "Super Hero" reading incentive in place where students can earn up to 12 different "Super Hero" buttons by reading for so many minutes. They love the idea of collecting the buttons but find they are running out of new books to read. We try to install the importance of reading and development of the imagination - especially in today’s world where gaming, iPads, iPhones and TV take so much away. Many are from low income families and the books they bring home from our library are the only ones they have. New books to select from would brighten up their day as well as the library and give them more incentive to read.

We are also implementing “MakerSpace” in our Learning Commons Library where students develop an inquiry mind as well as prepare students for our tech world. Updated non-fiction books would work well hand in hand for research purpose.
