Principal Burton Harper Bishop Klein is a community school that works with a diverse group of students from kindergarten to grade eight. Many of our students are Indigenous and are of visible minority. Literacy gaps among First Nations children are an issue impacting many communities throughout Saskatchewan. Over half of our students are reading below basic proficiency and here at Bishop Klein, we strive to lower the percentage and help our students have literacy skills to be able to succeed in their future. Reading is a skill that will allow our students the freedom to learn about anything and everything and it will boost their imagination and creativity. The ability to read can make or break a child’s future; it is a basic necessity and is crucial in building a more stable society and a stronger economy. As students struggle with reading move through school, they get more and more frustrated when they cannot understand simple concepts causing them to lose confident, lose interest and fall further behind their peers. At Bishop Klein our budget for our entire library costs, including books is only $1398 a year, which gives us a budget of $4.68 per student. Many of our library shelves are empty and filled with many boring, out-dated, tattered, uninteresting books. We want to be able to create a warm, vibrant and welcoming library space for our students. One of our goals is to spread literacy and the benefits of literacy to our students, we want our kids to feel comfortable and confident in their reading skills for today and the future. We want our kids to fall in love with reading all over again. With the help of Indigo Adopt a School Program, we can help our students enjoy the books they read and achieve their dreams by providing a strong foundation in reading.
