Principal Dale Cooper We need new and varied books as we are rather limited to what scholastics can offer us through money raised during scholastics book fairs. We have a very diverse population. Many of the students speak two languages and do not have access to computers or understand the benefit of public libraries. For many our library is the only source of reading materials. We try our best to get books that are relevant and have diverse protagonists. We spend what resources we have mainly on improving our guided reading books as many of our students’ literacy skills are lower than average, and we want to encourage and entice them to read at home. As the library technician, I do read to all classes K-Gr. 6 as I want to instill a passion for reading and curiosity of the world. Often books are the one way we can introduce a difficult topic such as “orange shirt day”, “mental health day” or “pink shirt day.” Reading stories allows us to connect on a different level. Unfortunately, having other monetary priorities often means books have to be re-read. Opportunities to incorporate more appropriate/specific books are missed since we do not have immediate access to them. Having Indigo sponsor this school would be beneficial, as it is our belief that books are one of the best ways to get children involved in their learning, their communities and their world. Reading books, especially picture books, is that one global method of communication that we all can understand, enjoy and participate in. Please consider us for this program. It would be deeply appreciated.
