When students in Parrsboro move from grade 6 to grade 7 they change buildings. The building with grades P - 6 does not have a librarian, but the building with grades 7 & 8 does. Students coming into grade 7 are very excited to have a staffed library that is open and available to them during class time, as well as lunch and recess. However, the majority of the grade 7 students are reading well below the expectations for their age and grade. The books in the grade 7 & 8 library are geared more towards high school than elementary. With a bare bones budget it is not possible to buy the material necessary to satisfy avid readers and to buy special hi/lo books for struggling readers, especially when one considers the mandate to buy both fiction and non-fiction material. It is my hope that with funding from the Adopt-A-School program that we will be able to build a library collection that services the needs and interests of all students in grades 7 & 8 at Parrsboro Regional High School.
