McArthurEdmonton, Alberta 397 / 215 Books Given
Principal Sherry Saulou We are culling our library and we are finding books that go back to 1963. 53% of our books are pre 2000. Only 18% of our collection is 2008 - 2018. We have cleaned out our hardcover Easy Picture Book Section and have deleted half of our titles. We have been using book fair money from scholastic to replace books and update our library books as well as our classroom books - this is where most of our budget for buying books comes from. We have a large population of Newcomers to our district who have Arabic as a first language so we have been trying to purchase books that are both Arabic and English to support their families in reading to and with them. We also have just started an early ed program (Pre-Kindergarten) this year and need to purchase board books for them. We are also on Edmonton Public Schools Vulnerability List. We have volunteers who come from Chrysalis and repair our books so they can be kept in circulation. We often are repairing them long after they should be discarded. Our kids love to read and deserve to read books that are current.
Our Top Five Reads this Year are:
Diary of a wimpy kid : Greg Heffley's journal
Now you see it! : watch Pokémon evolve-- right before your eyes!
