Don Valley Middle School

North York , Ontario 129 / 260 Books Given

Principal Anne Lee Over the last 3 years our school has undergone great changes and has transformed from a junior high to a middle school. We went from a grade 7,8,9 student population, to a now 6,7,8 school. The needs of our students have shifted dramatically and so has our need for books. We have undergone a major weeding from the board level which removed many of the high school books that don't service our students as well as getting rid of outdated materials. This culling removed more books than we can replenish with our budget. This does not even take into consideration the books needed for our new grade 6 population. Since last year, our school has doubled in population and our incoming students have a huge love of reading. We are a dual track school, meaning more than half of our students are in a French Immersion program. Less than a quarter of the books in our library allow students to read in their language of instruction, particularly in the fiction, social studies and science sections (and of these books, over half of these are 25 years old or older). Our student population is varied in socio-economic background. TDSB's funding formula continues to mean that school budgets are barely sufficient to cover operating costs, with little left over for building or improving the library. Our school has several special education programs, English Language Learners and we host international students, all of whom could benefit from our book collection. We would like to grow our selection of leveled readers, French content, dual language texts and graphic novels. It is imperative that we keep our library culturally relevant and up to date for our students' ongoing literacy needs and interests.

Our school is projected to have an increased enrollment year after year of approximately 125%. The budget and numbers listed above are from the 2017/2018 school year.

Thank you for your consideration. We would love to be part of the Adopt a School Program.
