Charles Bowman PS

Bowmanville, Ontario 352 / 712 Books Given

Principal Jacqueline Fehr Charles Bowman Public School needs new books for its school library to continue to help provide our students with a rich and engaging learning environment. Charles Bowman is a school in transition, as our Grade 7 and 8 students just recently moved to the intermediate school. We are also located in a newer neighbourhood where the surrounding area is continuing to be developed, and our enrollment is continuing to increase. Charles Bowman currently has 712 students enrolled this year, including 8 kindergarten classes. With such a large school population of primary students, the library has the potential to impact the education of a large number of children, especially early readers. We want these emergent readers to thrive and develop a love of reading. We believe that by introducing children to a variety of new books, that are engaging, entertaining, and bright, they will be inspired and motivated to read. We would also like to continue to captivate our older students, with current, high interest chapter books at a variety of reading levels to meet the individual needs of all of our students.
Currently, our students love to cuddle up and read books. As a result, many of our school and classroom books are starting to show just how much they are loved. In addition, many of our junior classroom libraries are limited. Teachers are doing their best, often buying their own books for their classroom libraries. The library also uses funds from a school-wide book fair to purchase new books. The problem is that these funds do not always accommodate our growing population, and the need for updated reference books.
Well-stocked school and classroom libraries with beautiful new books that are meaningful and accommodate the diverse learning needs of our students, will not only help develop strong literacy skills, but will also help to inspire a love of reading. Our goal is for our school library to reflect the importance we place on literacy, and for our students to continue to feel the magic of discovering a book for the first time.
