We are an amazingly busy school that provides a number of extracurricular experiences for our students. Our students are mostly new comers to Canada (85% within the last 1-5 years) who are learning the language and culture of their new country. Our families are extremely hard working & want to support their children anyway they can but they are also new to Canada & are starting over with limited time and monetary resources. Our library is well used but needs to better stocked with high interest books and lots of them!

"Corduroy by Don Freenman was my favourite story book as a child. Corduroy is a stuffed teddy bear in little green overalls that waits on a large department store shelf for someone to come along and love him.
One day a little girl wants to buy him, but her mother says no, because 'he doesn’t even look new; he’s lost a button on one of his straps.’ The llittle girl walks away, and Corduroy sadly watches her go.
That night he decides to go on a mission to find his lost button, which must be somewhere in the huge store. On one of the mattresses he thinks he’s found his button, but he gets taken downstairs by the night watchman before he can get it. The next morning he wakes up to a wonderful surprise-someone has come back to love him, even though he still doesn’t have his button.
The story of Corduroy warms my heart to this day. "

"My favourite Character from a book as a child, was from a book named "Bridge to Terabithia". It was a boy named Jess Aaron's. He originates from Bridge to Terabithia. His story is very sad, but he has perseverance. Jess and his best friend Leslie Burkes, create an Imaginary Kingdom called "Terabithia".They played their, had good times, and spent some of their best memories together in Terabithia. It was basically a place to escape reality and be free. One day Jess got invited to an art museum, he also was a very talented artist. He accepted the invitation without notifying Leslie. A bored Leslie, she had nothing to do without Jess. She decides to Explore the land of Terabithia by herself. She died trying to cross the rope swing across to the platform. Jess was in shock with the death. He had no choice at that time, but to accept the Death. He handled it great without fear. He was really strong, outrageous, and persevered for his age (10). That is why he was my favourite book character."

"Currently I am reading a book called “Wonder,” author: R.J. Palacio. So far, I think it’s my favourite book now. My favourite character is Summer. Summer Dawson is a girl who is loyal, mature, and compassionate. There was a new student in her school, August Pullman, who had physical disorders, which lead the other students not to talk to him, sit with him during lunch, gossiping about him etc. One day, Summer saw August sitting by himself and heard the others gossip about him, she felt bad for him so she decided to go to August’s lunch table and sit with him. She was very friendly and brave enough to go to his table group, and she didn’t have any concerns of whether anyone is gossiping or not about them. When it was Halloween, August dressed up and no one knew who he was because he changed his costume, and overheard Jack Will whining about what Mr. Tushman obligated him to for August. After that he suspected the Summer was obligated the same job as Jack Will, and August turned out to be wrong about it and they pinky swore that he’ll never question about her loyalty. I really like how Summer is very compassionate about her friendship and tries to maintain it."

"My dream library looks full of new books on the first week of school and always half empty throughout the school year. Where students are always able to read all year long their newest and favorite titles."

" The room is huge and the walls are built tall. A large chandelier hangs from the ceiling. Shiny crystals attached to one another. The air is crisp but the room is still warm. A soft furry carpet covering the cold floor, it's white with a large black spiral in the centre. Black leather couches and comfy bean bags surrounds a wooden table. The legs of the table curved outwards, carved with amazing designs. The designs dance around all four legs each telling a story. Wooden shelves covering all walls, the walls they can no longer be seen. Books, and books fill the shelves up but they are still hungry for more. Every book one can desire stands straight on a shelf in the room. It's quiet but not silent as soft music fills the large space. A child sits upon one of the couches and smiles at something in her hand. It's a book, a small book but the words I cannot see. My eyes open I was sleeping, dreaming of my dream library."

" My favourite characters were Hansel and Gretel , from the Hansel and Gretel book. The author of this book are the Brothers Grimm. In this story 2 brother and sister live with their step mother and father. In the beginning their family are very poor and their step mother get's this idea of abandoning the kids in the forest because their is no money for food. The children smart enough leave a trail of bread crumbs. However when night falls the trail has disappeared , the birds ate it. So, they walked deeper into the forest until they come to a house made of cookies and candy. A witch then lures them inside with more candy and locks Hansel in a cage. Then she sets Gretel to do the housework. One day, the witch decides it's time to cook Hansel. She tells Gretel to heat up the oven but, Gretel smart enough ask's the witch to check if it's warm enough. As soon as the witch sticks her head in the oven Gretel pushes the witch into the oven and shuts the door. After that she unlocks her brother's cage. Then they open up the chests and stuff some jewels and gold with them and go home, being rich. I loved this book as a child because a candy made house was a dream come true story for me. I liked Hansel and Gretel for their smartness, cleverness and quick thinking. If it had not been for Gretel being brave Hansel would have been cooked in the oven and gone forever."

"My favourite character is Koala Lou from the Mem Fox story. I love Mem Fox as an author & I love how spunky & determined Koala Lou is, even when things don't go as she had hoped. It's still one of my favourite books, even though I am an adult & I still love sharing it with my daughter, even though she's a teenager."

Why are you supporting this school and their library?

"The children at Regent Heights are voracious readers who devour books. They get super excited when new graphic novels, picture books, chapter books, and non-fiction readers are released into the library. When my class has its Library Book Exchange Period, it is not unusual to see the kids make side deals and negotiate over who gets which book when its returned. The enthusiasm for high interest texts (especially graphic novels and culturally current texts) is infectious.

RH is a wonderfully active school that teaches kids from many walks of life. Many are new immigrant children whose access to new books is wholly dependent on what's available at the public and school library. As students, they are creative, imaginative and ready to learn--whether it be in the classroom, online, or when immersed in a well constructed story."
