Brooklands SchoolWinnipeg, Manitoba 56 / 210 Books Given
Principal Rex Ferguson-Baird
We love to grow our library! Reading is an integral part of our school culture and we have renovated a dynamic space that we call the Learning Commons. This expanded space provides a home for our community reading program as well as our daily reading groups. However, the renovation did not include capital for our collection. We have a number of programs in the school that help our students grow in their ability and love of reading. We have learned a lot from Richard Allington’s research on what makes effective teachers of reading. He says, “Simply put, students need enormous quantities of successful reading to become independent, proficient readers.” (Allington, 2002.) A great side effect of these programs is that our students are reading all of our books! Our collection is on the smaller and older side and we are looking for ways to grow it. The Indigo Adopt a School Program will be a great fit with our goal!
