Our school deals with all the issues that comes from trying to fill the gap created in a poor socioeconomic environment between home and school. Furthermore, we run an Immersion program so we need to have two libraries in one. Also, many families do not have means to create home libraries so the school is the only place these students will ever come into contact with books.

What is your favourite memory from your elementary school library and why?

"When I was a little girl in elementary school, I couldn't wait to go to the Library at school and pick up a new book. The Library was so big, with shelves full of pages that would open my imagination and I couldn't wait to crack open a new book. These books would become my best friends for a few moments and I didn't want to let them go.
To this day, my love of reading has not disappeared. I encourage my own children to read, by going to the local Library often, purchasing books for them and I am also a volunteer librarian at their school. "

This classic by Robert Munsch is one of the only memories I have of having received a book as a present from my own Mother. I always recall with laughter how much I enjoyed that book. Only 30 years later would I make the connection between the the author and the tale, while reading other Munsch stories with my own daughter and pleasantly discovering that The Paper Bag Princess was also written by him. "

"Reading has always been a huge part of my life. I have strong memories of my parents reading me bedtime stories and can remember dreaming of the characters we read about. As I grew up, I began reading more independently and started being able to become a part of the books I read. I had trouble putting down the books I was reading and often found myself staying up until the early morning because I was so enthralled in what I was reading.

Today, I am blessed to be given the opportunity to read with young minds. I love being able to share a favourite book with my students and hearing about their perceptions of the story we journeyed in together. I have realized that students of all ages love to be read to and many love reading just as much as I do.

Books allow students to become part of another world. They become someone else, they can be whoever they want in the story. Books allow these young developing individuals to explore and journey. They allow for imagination to sore and strong connections to be made. Sometimes, books can be the shelter that kids need from the difficult realities that life often puts them in. Books have such power and can truly change the minds of all that open themselves up to them.

It is so important to allow students to have books in their school library. So often they do not have access to them at home. If they can explore them in schools, they can gain so much from reading the books they choose to open."

"I'm supporting St Mary's in this venture, because they find unique ways of teaching to their student community. We all learn in our own unique way. St Mary's teachers understand and respect that, and for that reason they work hard to find unique hands on ways of teaching their students. Books play a vital role in that!

With the help of our Community we have been successful in increasing the size of our classroom libraries. Which in turn provides children the opportunity to discover and create a love for reading.

At St Mary's, early literacy is greatly promoted, with that in mind, we have reading clubs, peer mentoring programs where older grades read to younger ones.

The mind is a beautiful thing to send traveling into the world of the written word. With each book, we enjoy a new journey and a new adventure. So, I am excited to be able to bring more future book adventures to my school!

Thank you Indigo!

"My favourite character is Horton from Horton Hears a Who. Though simple and naive, Horton follows is conviction regardless of his persecution from the inhabitants of Nule. He is a great example of being principled and loyal. "I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant is loyal one hundred percent". He lived these words. How many of us can say that? He also said, "a person's a person, no matter how small". He is also an embassador of inclusiveness. All are equal regardless of their differences. A great example for all of us."

What does your dream library look like?

"My dream library would have plenty of comfy places to cozy up with great books. So you could send hours reading and emerging yourself into the story.

The children's section would have a built in play area and several reading to children's nooks, allowing Librarians a chance to read to children.

My dream library would have response letters from authors; asking them how they came up with their story inspirations. Of course it would have to have special spots for DR Seuss and Robert Munch classics.

My dream library would have interactive surveys, so that library goers could find the perfect book for them.

Finally, my dream library would house a huge selection of "Twist a Plot" novels that I just adored as a child. These books are great as they enabled readers to decided where the story line would go next.

In my dream library, each patron would have a chance to experience the joy of reading and embark on many adventures.

Why are you supporting this school and their library?

"As a teacher at St.Mary's, I have seen first hand how the generosity of others has benefited our school. Since being part of Adopt a School, we have been able to update all our class libraries as well as as the teachers teaching resources. Nothing beats seeing the faces of the students when an Indigo box arrives with new books filled with new reading adventures. As well, I have seen the same look of excitement in the eyes of our teachers when their wish list is granted. Teachers have been able to discover new books like Wonder and The Fourteenth Goldfish and thanks to Adopt a School, we have been able to purchase these wonderful new books. We are now able to expose students to new books that they can relate to and that deal with issues that they face in 2016.

I am a true believer in the power of reading. As a student, I struggled with writing but thanks to my parents and teachers I was fortunate to have developed a love for reading. I believe that it was that love of reading and having books at my disposal that helped me to improve my skills as a student. It is for this reason, that I helped developed our Hall of Literature which is a place where our students come to read for the simple love of reading and where our older students help our younger students learn to read.

On behalf of my staff members, I would like to thank Indigo for this wonderful program as well as to all those who have donated so generously to our school. We can make a difference, one book at a time! "
