Three favourite books in my school library are:
1. The first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Time and time again I have watched struggling or reluctant readers get drawn into the world of Harry Potter and the sense of pride and accomplishment they receive tackling not only a large chapter book but more often the whole series warms my heart!
2. Hockey Superstars by Paul Romanuk, any year in that series. Many reluctant or struggling readers love hockey stats and info and these books feed on that. They have pride of place on my shelves and are worn out and replaced many times over. It isn't a novel but it's valued just the same.
3. I Survived series by Lauren Tarshis. This series will always have a special place in my heart. I might be a librarian and love to read but I have a son who was once a reluctant reader. I tried anything and everything, throwing book after book his way, hoping something would stick. The first book in this series started him on his way. The books are small, manageable, chapter books that are based on real events and keep kids coming back for more. Trust me on this one!
