I remember reading To Kill a Mockingbird as a preteen and being so deeply affected by the story. Although I knew that prejudice existed, growing up in a suburb of multi-cultural Toronto in the 80's meant I had a very different experience than that of the setting of the book - the deep south in the 1930's. The book dealt well with complicated themes in a way that grade schoolers could understand - I learned about injustice along with Scout, Atticus Finch attained hero-status in my young eyes, and the ending of the book was both sad and uplifting at the same time.
