I fell in love with reading at a very young age. My relationship with books began as a toddler, however I think my love for books began at age five, when I started primary school. I remember coming home from kindergarten one day, eager to show my parents what I’d been given by the teacher- my very first flyer for a Scholastic book order. To most of my classmates, this probably wasn’t a big deal. The excitement a new toy provided most young children was equivalent to the joy books gave me. My little eyes widened as scanned the pages, pointing to a new “must have” book on every page. But when I came across Barbara Parks’ “Junie. B Jones”, I knew that those would be the books for me. I spent night after night reading book after book, falling in love with Parks’ writing style, and Junie B.’s unmistakeable humour. I felt like I was right there alongside Junie B. through every adventure- trips to visit her “prin-ci-PAL”, rides on the stupid smelly bus, and of course the event where she won one of her most prized possessions, her yucky fruit cake. Through projects like Adopt a School, others can fall in love with reading too- at any age!
