St Teresa of Calcutta is a brand new, shiny, 21st Century school in Windsor, Ontario; built without a school library. It is filled with over 530 children, representing some of Windsor's newest Canadians, working class families and some struggling families. Opportunity and experiences for these kids come from education.
The greatest thing about books is their ability to provide an escape from reality (e.g., the "Amulet" series by Kazu Kibuishi). They allow you to travel to places unknown simply by turning pages (e.g., "I Survived" series by Lauren Tarshis). They grow rich vocabularies and imagination. They are, however, a luxury that many of our students' families can ill afford.
The nearest public library is an over 2 km walk from our school. Classroom teachers rely on the generosity of friends, Scholastic book orders, garage sales, or their own money to have a "classroom library" available for their students. For the love of books and all they provide, I am supporting this school.
