My grade 6 teacher, Mr. Granger, helped me fall in love with reading! I was a voracious reader before that, but he really created a climate of fun when it came to literature.
I vividly remember his classroom library stocked up to the gills with a wide variety of chapter books at different levels: there were ones written by Roald Dahl, The Babysitters Club, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys to name a few. There was something for everyone, and we were always clamoring to see what new titles had been added! He encouraged us to read every day after lunch, which made for a fantastic transition back from recess. It was always calming and I remember feeling very centered during that short period of quiet reading. I also remember that we had fun reading challenges and every month we celebrated our successes with a prize of our choice from his Treasure Chest, which were usually more books! It was definitely something that we all looked forward to! Mr. Granger made reading a very enjoyable activity through his positive approach of it all, and through his great variety of books!
