When I was a child, my father was the first to teach me how to listen to a story and understand its pictures. Even before I started school, he used to read me picture books and stories like the ones from Shel Silverstein. He would often read me one of my favourite Silverstein books, The Giving Tree, where through pictures and words, I learned that sometimes love can make you give someone everything you have. I quickly grew to love this relationship between pictures and words! This soon lead me to reading and loving comic books! To this day I still love to read comics and love them for their potential to make readers out of any student! As the Teacher Librarian at Lord Lansdowne Public School, I can see how much the students love comics and graphic novels. Often during a book exchange period, I see that most of the students will congregate around the graphic novel section of the library, eager to see what comics are available. This year, one of my goals is to grow the graphic novel section of our library. I know the kids would love to see new comics on the shelf!
