Reading is important to me because reading in itself is value. Reading is one of the first and primary ways that we discover ourselves and our world. How do we extend the life of the mind beyond our circumstances? How do we see what cannot be seen? How do we engage with the past and the future? How do we live in worlds that are not our own? How do we confront ourselves - our biases , our flaws, and our strengths? Through reading, of course! Reading is the university of the self, constructed by ourselves, to augment our inner selves and for no other purpose than those purposes that the self chooses. It is the beginning of what we call free will, self-invention, and personal growth.
